About Nizam
Professor Nizam Mamode is one of the UK's most distinguished transplant surgeons. He performed the first robotic kidney transplant in the UK, the first robotic donor nephrectomy, and led the surgical team that used the world's first integration of 3D printing to plan a kidney transplant into a two-year-old child. He has published over 100 papers and one book, and was made Professor of Transplant Surgery in 2015.
Before retiring from clinical practice in 2022, Nizam served as Clinical Lead for Transplant Surgery at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Consultant at Great Ormond Street Hospital. He was Chairman of the Chapter of Surgeons at the British Transplantation Society and served on the advisory board of the Confidential Reporting System in Surgery, promoting safety in surgical practice. He was also responsible for negotiating new contracts for junior and senior doctors across the NHS.
A career defined by advancing what is possible in surgery, and ensuring that what is possible reaches the patients who need it most.
At Strasys, Nizam brings his deep understanding of clinical systems, surgical innovation, and healthcare governance to help clients address complex challenges. His career-long focus on equitable access to care, from pioneering new techniques that improve outcomes to advocating for underserved populations internationally, aligns with Strasys's core mission: redesigning health systems around the needs of the people they serve.
Nizam has initiated and supported healthcare programmes overseas, including establishing a transplant programme in Mauritius. He has volunteered with Medical Aid for Palestinians and testified before the UK Parliament's International Development Committee on healthcare conditions in conflict zones. Beyond his professional achievements, he has co-founded a school for children in Kenya and enjoys climbing, sailing, and philosophy.
